New type of dementia identified

A team of researchers from different universities and research centers form the United States, Japan, Australia, Sweden,  United Kingdom and Austria led by Dr. Peter T. Nelson has identified a new dementia traditionally diagnosed as Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). This new proteinopathy has been called LATE (limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy), and about a quarter of people over 85 years of age present enough to impair their cognitive abilities. LATE shares genetic risk factors and brain atrophies with AD, which facilitates confusions in the diagnosis.

It is increasingly evident that dementias are caused by a growing variety of altered proteins. The identification, characterization, and understanding of the mechanisms of each of them will be essential to develop truly effective treatments.
